Fotografo newyorkese dalla carriera trentennale, Bill Armostrong ama sperimentare con il mezzo fotografico per inventare coloratissimi mondi sospesi tra il reale e l’immaginario.
“The Infinity series” comprende un ampio corpus di fotografie, dal figurativo all’astratto realizzate, a partire dal 1997, con un singolare processo creativo che prevede di impostare l’anello di messa a fuoco della fotocamera su infinito per ottenere immagini estremamente sfuocate.
Le sue opere sono il frutto di un complesso lavoro di manipolazione su immagini preesistenti che vengono fotocopiate, tagliate, dipinte e di nuovo fotografate, per reinventarle tanto da un punto di vista estetico quanto semantico.
Extreme blurring makes the edges within the collages disappear, so the photographs appear to be seamless, integrated images. This sleight of hand allows me to conjure a mysterious tromp l’oeil world that hovers between the real and the fantastic. It is a world just beyond our grasp, where place may be suggested, but is never defined, and where the identity of the amorphous figures remains in question. It is a world that might exist in memory, in dreams, or, perhaps, in a parallel universe yet unvisited.

È docente presso l’International Center of Photography e la School of Visual Arts.
