I paesaggi al chiaro di luna di Paul Thompson

Paul Thompson è un fotografo pubblicitario di successo, ma la sua vera passione è la fotografia di paesaggio. Negli ultimi anni si è dedicato a numerosi progetti personali, tra cui “Moonlight”, una incantevole serie di scatti notturni.

Realizzate con una fotocamera a pellicola di grande formato nelle notti di luna piena sulla costa britannica, spesso in mezzo alle intemperie, le fotografie di Thompson rivelano una lodevole abilità tecnica e un lavoro lungo e paziente di molte ore d’esposizione.

Ispirate alle marine della pittura romantica europea, e in particolare alle opere del connazionale William Turner, il “pittore della luce”, le immagini di Paul Thompson sono un elogio alla magnificenza della natura, una natura incontaminata e silenziosa, che evoca quel senso di sublime tanto caro ai pittori del XVIII e XIX secolo.

 Every since the first whispers of lycanthropy in First Century Europe, the full moon has carried with it the promise of magic and madness. In science and in folklore, the lunar phase has been associated with insomnia and fitful, disrupted sleep. I only shoot my Moonlight pictures during the full moon, waiting each month for its arrival. These are photographs of places, but they are also photographs of time passing. Over the course of these pivotal midnight hours, the tides come and go; the clouds shift positions, and the skies might grow stormy at any moment. The shutter remains open, and the camera records all the details that are too short-lived for the human eye to register.
