I ritratti zoomorfi di Bill Mayer

Artista figurativo statunitense, di fama internazionale, Bill Mayer è l’autore di una serie di singolari dipinti a guazzo che hanno per protagonisti balzani personaggi dalle sembianze animalesche.

Nei ritratti surreali di Mayer, eseguiti con tecnica magistrale, lodevoli per la ricchezza dei dettagli – esteticamente affini a certi stilemi di altre epoche della storia dell’arte, dalla pittura fiamminga, a quella rinascimentale e al barocco – conigli, topi, rane, anatre, scimmie e rinoceronti, appaiono acchittati in abiti e accessori eleganti e vistosi, in un mix calibratissimo di paradosso e umorismo macabro che trascina l’osservatore dentro a un immaginario di cupa magia.

For me, the most important element of the painting is the concept. The medium you use is just a way of furthering that original concept or finding some elements that add an intelligence to the work. Most of the time I start with small thumbnails which help me sort out the basic visual, a starting place. It probably comes from years of commercial work where you have to show your ideas before you start on a piece… Sometimes I will pull a piece of acetate over a painting and try to figure out what was bothering me and try a few things. Sometimes I will scan them in and use Photoshop, try some things, then go back and paint that way.

Bill Mayer è nato a Birmingham, in Alabama, il 25 ottobre 1951 e attualmente vive e lavora a Decatur, in Georgia. Ha studiato Illustrazione alla Ringling School of Art di Sarasota, in Florida. Nel corso della sua vitalissima carriera, ha ricevuto commissioni da clienti di prestigio come Coca Cola, DreamWorks, Cartoon Network, Mattel, Hasbro, Delta Airlines, Levi’s, Jose Cuervo e IBM.
